Barnet describes the Golders Green conservation area as the town centre together with the railway and bus and coach station. The parades straddle Finchley Road, running north to south, and Golders Green Road and North End Road, running east to west. Transport for London’s station page places Golders Green on the Northern line. Near the interchange, buses, shop deliveries and residents can all compete for the same kerb.

For building work, the first question is not the design but the kerb. Where will a van stop, for how long, and under whose rules? A residential side street, a parade frontage and a bus lane are three different answers. We walk the street, note the signs and bays, and identify the highway authority before a delivery date is set.

Barnet is the highway authority for its local roads. On those roads, a Barnet highways licence is needed for scaffolding, for site hoarding near the footway and for cranes working over the highway.
