The Challenge
The existing kitchen had a structural column in an awkward position near the intended island location. The column could not be moved without significant structural works beyond the project budget. The original quarry tile floor had several cracked and hollow sections, requiring full removal and a new concrete subfloor before the engineered oak could be laid. The boiler was in the kitchen and needed to be relocated to a utility cupboard.
Our Solution
Our joiner incorporated the structural column into the island design — the column became the island's end detail, clad in matching painted hardwood, and the island top was corbelled over it. The quarry tiles were fully removed and a new 75mm reinforced concrete slab laid. The boiler was relocated to a purpose-built utility cupboard in the corridor. The project remained within budget throughout.
