Project Type
Full House Refurbishment
Duration
18 weeks
Project Value
£148,000
The Challenge
The property had a complex mix of original Victorian and 1960s-70s fabric — original cornices and plasterwork in the principal rooms, but a concrete staircase and partition walls added in the 1960s that were not in keeping with the period character. The clients wanted to remove the 1960s insertions and return the house to a more sympathetic period character, which required structural assessment of the 1960s concrete stair before it could be removed.
Our Solution
A structural engineer confirmed the 1960s staircase was non-loadbearing and could be removed. The space was reinstated with a traditional open-string staircase in oak with a painted balustrade, referencing the Victorian character of the house. 1960s partition walls were removed and original room proportions restored. All 1960s artex ceiling treatments were removed and lime plaster skimmed to match the original Victorian rooms.
