Plumber Visit Preparation Checklist

A few minutes of preparation before your plumber arrives can save time and money. Here is what to do.

Before the visit

Know where your stopcock is and test it

Usually under the kitchen sink. Turn clockwise to shut off. If it is stiff, do not force it — tell the plumber.

Clear under sinks and around the work area

Essential

Remove everything from under kitchen and bathroom sinks. Clear space around the boiler, cylinder, or toilet.

Know your boiler make and model

Check the front panel or manual. The plumber may need specific parts — having the model saves a second visit.

Photograph the problem if possible

Recommended

A dripping pipe, a stain on the ceiling, a pressure gauge reading. Photos help the plumber prepare.

Note when the problem started and any patterns

Does it leak only when the heating is on? Does the pressure drop overnight? Context helps diagnosis.

Check if you have a water softener or filter system

These affect plumbing work and need to be accounted for.

List all other plumbing jobs while the plumber is there

A dripping tap, a slow drain, a leaking basin trap. Address multiple issues in one visit to save call-out costs.

Have towels and buckets accessible

Optional
