Electrician Visit Preparation Checklist

A prepared home means faster, cheaper electrical work. This quick checklist covers what to do before your electrician arrives.

Before the visit

Clear access to the consumer unit (fuse board)

Essential

Often in hallway cupboards buried behind coats and shoes. Clear completely — the electrician needs full access.

Clear the work area

Essential

If sockets or switches are being replaced: move furniture away from walls. If rewiring: clear rooms significantly.

Note which circuits serve which rooms

Recommended

If your consumer unit is not labelled, note what goes off when you flip each breaker. This saves the electrician time.

Write down everything you need done

Essential

List every job — new sockets, moved switches, outside light, EV charger. Avoids forgetting something and needing a second visit.

Have your EICR available if you have one

Previous electrical reports help the electrician understand your installation history.

Note access restrictions

Recommended

Loft access, underfloor access, any walls that cannot be chased (listed building, decorative plaster). Tell the electrician before they start.

Plan for a period without power

Recommended

Any work on the consumer unit or main circuits requires the power to be off. Make sure laptops are charged, food is not at risk, and you have a torch.

Pets and children away from the work area

Essential

Exposed cables, open consumer units, and power tools are dangerous. Keep everyone clear.
